🕹️ 🎮 🎲 Can logical puzzles make learning maths fun?

Parents of children struggling with maths often seek recommendations for books or games that will provide a different, more enjoyable approach compared to traditional schooling.

But making maths inherently ‘fun’ is, in principle, impossible!

Learning maths is hard work that boils down to two essential elements: acquiring mathematical ideas and tackling maths brain-twisters.

Schools and textbooks provide knowledge, but fixing maths brain-twisters is ultimately up to the kids themselves, and many kids find the brain-twisty sensation that accompanies this process far from enjoyable.

True, games and puzzles can help and add fun to maths learning, but there are hundreds of brain-twisters to fix!  So, no magic: all kids have to go through fixing each and every brain-twister one after another. It’s hard work, and no books or puzzles will do this job for them!

However, learning maths can indeed be made enjoyable if kids are properly helped to fix their maths brain-twisters, following the …

But let’s shift our focus today to something else!

Logical puzzles.

Much like learning maths, logical puzzles are not enjoyable for everyone. Moreover, despite their potential to enhance your child’s cognitive abilities, they don’t necessarily correlate with maths proficiency. Personal preferences for puzzles vary, even among individuals with strong mathematical backgrounds.

The internet is full of logical, ‘like-maths-looking’ puzzles.

❗However, not all logical puzzles will directly help your kids with maths. For example, the attached puzzle.

It’s not directly related to developing maths thinking at all! It’s more of a linguistic challenge, blending English and Maths.

But it’s fun!
(Well… That is if you enjoy maths-looking puzzles, of course…)

N.B.
My use of the term 🧠Maths Brain-Twister🌀 can be confusing, as many people associate the phrase ‘brain-twister’ with some sort of logical puzzle.

Allow me to clarify.

When I mention 🧠Maths Brain-Twister🌀, I’m referring to the micro maths concepts and ideas that cause a twisty sensation in children’s brains when they learn maths. This discomfort stems from the rigid, abstract, binary ‘black and white’ nature of maths, which can be challenging for human brains to absorb.

The attached puzzle is a true brain-twister in the traditional sense of the word!
