👨👩👧👦 ‘What’s the point of maths?’

or
How is maths useful in the real world?
How can you answer these questions so your child feels satisfied with your answer?
Maths is compulsory in all schools on Earth, but why?
Your child wants to know why they have to press on learning maths!
Especially if they do not really enjoy it.
They asked you ‘What’s the point of maths?’ or ‘How is maths useful in the real world?’ (or similar) many times before.
Maybe you told them that maths helps to:
🟣 Understand why things happen the way they do.
🟣 Understand why presents cost more at Christmas.
🟣 Predict what might happen in the future.
🟣 Develop your problem-solving abilities.
🟣 Develop your pattern-spotting skills.
(This list can go on forever…)
Or maybe you tried:
🟣 Maths is everywhere, see? You have to…
🟣 In a money-driven world you … You just have to…!
You could even appeal to Galileo’s authority:
🟣 “Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.
But your child is not satisfied with your answer(s) and keeps asking these types of questions about maths again and again.
So, what can you say to them?
And my answer is:
🟪 If a child keeps asking these types of questions, it’s maybe time to not try to answer them anymore!
🟪 It looks like this might not be time to talk.
🟪 It’s time to act.

🟪 The correct maths teaching is the only way to help your child understand maths properly.
🟪 Once they grow to understand maths, they grow to enjoy learning it and start to see how to use maths – independently.
